@emilernebro @25jonathan I recently started considering the same issue. As I've been playing more I noticed I naturally gravitated towards pinky anchoring. The problem for me is in the last year as I've gotten deeper into finger style and playing more often and longer, I get a lot of pinky pain and it starts to feel tired. I also might have some nerve issues from an old injury / cupital tunnel issues and sometimes it gets really numb and wants to stay curled up.

I'm considering retraining to not plant my pinky just to avoid the pain/numbness, but since it's so instinctual I'm considering practicing with a rubber hand keeping the pinky tied to ring because its so hard to stop.

As for me your answer could not be long enough :)
I have been trying to go to both the extremes - either to play everything by ear or by theory. And I failed ha-ha-ha.
But what is slowly slowly coming out of it is the understanding that every one of us finally has to find his /her own way to master those sweet "secret" tones.

Hi Emil and thank you for your reply. You have encouraged me to listen and watch how other players do it which is great advice. I an enjoying this lesson and practicing the runs daily. Perhaps after a while a "new" style will emerge from my fingers! Thank you.

@emilernebro Thanks for your answer regarding my question. I just changed strings and still have the same results. I believe it is my fat fingers and perhaps callouses on them causing the overtones. I'll just have to try out different muting options...
